Assuming that humans are more prone to creating social norms, moral rules, and laws than are non-humans, what might explain this difference?
One part of the answer may lie in the greater social complexity and inclination for cooperation with large numbers of conspecifics found in humans relative to non-humans.
Unlike most animals, humans have multilayered societies, although hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) and bottle-nosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have layered societies that approach the complexity of those of humans in that there is cooperation between higher-level social units.
Humans are, however, probably unique in the extent to which there is cooperation even between individuals who barely know one another or have not even met, but who are either distant kin or are symbolically connected in some way.
Such cooperation would probably be impossible without the aid of language, which enables people to deliver messages to others.
The idea of security can be considered to be one of the most fundamental of animal instincts.
Every animal needs to feel secure and protected from predators.
The very existence of a species can be threatened if it cannot identify threats, communicate them to others in the species, and eventually develop a mechanism to challenge the threat.
In the case of animals, there is a process of constant watchfulness to examine the surroundings and be aware of the presence of others in the space.
Biologists have spent time studying the ways in which many birds and primates are able to keep an eye on their habitat, and when a threat is observed, the animals use a special kind of signal to communicate information about the danger to other animals in the space.
This process has received scientific attention because it signals a level of cognition that can offer ways of understanding how animals communicate with each other.
The key issue is that gaining a sense of security is an instinct that could be essential for the continued existence of a species.
Adopting a growth mindset opens up a host of benefits that ripple through learning and life.
First and foremost, it cultivates resilience.
When setbacks occur — as they inevitably do — people with growth mindsets see them as temporary obstacles rather than proof of inadequacy.
They tap into creativity to find new strategies and keep moving forward.
This persistence often leads to greater achievement than raw talent ever could.
Beyond resilience, a growth orientation encourages curiosity and experimentation.
It turns mistakes from sources of shame into valuable feedback, fostering a spirit of continuous improvement.
And by valuing effort over outcome, individuals tend to maintain motivation longer, enjoying progress for its own sake rather than just external validation.
On the traditional family smallholding, labour and domestic life are more closely interwoven than they are in a mill town, where the industrial is one thing and the domestic another.
Peasants have children, for example, for much the same reasons that anyone else does, but also because they will grow up to work on the land, take care of the elderly, and eventually inherit one’s modest allocation of acres.
As well as looking cute, they represent labour-power, a welfare system, and the continued survival of the farm.
In modern civilisation, by contrast, it is hard to say what children are for.
They don’t work, for example, and some of them are not particularly decorative.
They are expensive to keep and not always rational.
Caring for them as infants is one of the most difficult forms of labour known to humankind.
Given all this, it is surprising that the modern human species manages to reproduce itself at all.
Yet again there is no question of the utility of children among peasants and tenant farmers.
The value that ethical consumers put on personality and direct trade is relatively easy for them to realise.
Unlike the household confronting a bossy butcher or baker, most ethical consumers do not confront real makers of what they buy.
This allows them to construct these producers as like-minded people who share their values.
The farmers who grow the organic crops can be thought of as doing so not for impersonal commercial reasons, but for reasons that are more deep-seated, ‘thought to be internal to the individual’.
They can be thought of as living the organic life that many ethical consumers value.
Similarly, the smiling smallholders who grow the coffee can be imagined as producing for fair trade because they embrace the values, rather than because they want a better position in the international coffee market.
And, of course, those who buy ethical fabrics made by Bangladeshi women can assume that those women are grateful for paid work that empowers them, rather than seeing that work as a shameful public recognition that their households do not have the resources to be self-reliant.
It appears, then, that ethical consumers preferring direct trade and other consumers preferring impersonal trade may well want the same thing, that the objects in their lives not be impersonal commodities.
However, their approaches differ.
Ethical consumers seek objects that already carry identity, that of their makers.
The others seek impersonal objects that they can stamp with the identities and social relationships with which they will be associated.
Both, however, differ from those for whom personality in economic relations signals subordination, whether poor families confronting merchants on whom they rely for credit or merchants confronting rich customers on whom they depend for trade.
